10 Quick facts you didn’t know about Africa

 

 

Because we love Africa so much, we thought to share a few cool facts you might not know about Africa. Perhaps, we can get you to love Africa as much as we do!

 

  • The first African country to legalize same-sex marriage was South Africa–  it was the fifth country in the world to recognize same sex marriage. In fact, the South African Constitution, post-Apartheid, was the first in the world to outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation.

 

 

  • The African population is much younger than the rest of the world – Over 50% of Africans are under the age of 20, compared to a global median age of 30.  Africans will make up a huge proportion of the world market in years to come.

 

  • More than half of the world’s mobile money accounts are in Africa – 12% of African adults have access to one, compared to just 2% worldwide. In Kenya the figure stands at 58%. Across the continent only a third of adults have access to a traditional bank account.

 

  • The South African Winelands region features almost 100 different estates – the wine industry in South Africa is the oldest outside of Europe. It is even rumored that Napoleon’s favorite wine was from this region.

 

  • Rwanda was ranked fifth in gender parity outcomes for the year 2017 – It only ranked behind the Nordic countries which have consistently been touted as models for achieving equal outcomes for both men and women. Rwanda was ranked ahead of the US and France.

 

  • The Seychelles are home to the most educated Africans –Seychelles’ literacy rates (Adult: 92%, Youth: 99%) with Zimbabwe a close second  (Adult: 91.2%, Youth: 99%).

 

  • Almost half of the gold ever mined on Earth has come from a single place – The Witwatersrand in South Africa has been mined since 1886, and is still operational today, supplying gold all over the world.

 

  • Over 25% of the world’s languages are spoken only in Africa – There are thought to be around 2,000 languages in use on the continent, and the diversity among them is quite astounding!

 

  • Africa’s population will more than double to 2.3 billion people by 2050 – the world’s second most populous continent continues to have a high birth rate, coupled with low infant mortality, and looks to keep growing.
